The Doors Are Open

There is a peculiar moment in the life of an idea when it stops being something written in notebooks, talked about over cups of tea and endlessly adjusted on a computer screen.

Somebody else can finally walk into it.

On 23 July 2026, Uncommonology® reached that moment.

Release 1.0 went live.

That does not mean Uncommonology is finished. In fact, describing it as finished would rather miss the point. It means the foundations are now sufficiently real that people can enter, study, complete a course and leave with something they did not know before.

For something that began as an unusual idea about unusual knowledge, that feels like a fairly important threshold.

What Exactly Is Release 1.0?

Software companies have trained us to associate version numbers with updates that fix seventeen obscure bugs, move a button three millimetres to the left and mysteriously make something else stop working.

Here, Release 1.0 means something simpler.

It is the first version of Uncommonology® that functions as an actual learning platform rather than merely the plan for one.

The website is live. Student accounts work. Courses can be entered and completed. Progress can be recorded. Reflections and assessments can be submitted. Completion certificates can be issued.

Most importantly, there is now something to study.

That last part matters because Uncommonology was never intended to exist simply as an elaborate fictional institution with an attractive crest and a suspiciously confident Chancellor. The fictional university provides the setting. The learning inside it is real.

The aim remains straightforward: take ideas that have slipped between conventional subjects, been forgotten, misunderstood or simply overlooked, and give people somewhere enjoyable to encounter them.

The First Door Is Free

The starting point is the Initial Certificate of Uncommonology®.

It costs nothing.

The certificate introduces the basic idea behind Uncommonology through five lessons, ending with a short reflection rather than an examination. It is deliberately small. Nobody needs to commit weeks of their life merely to discover whether this peculiar little corner of education suits them.

Instead, the Initial Certificate acts as the front door.

It introduces a way of learning built around curiosity rather than qualification collecting: following an idea because it is interesting, discovering the connections around it and becoming comfortable with the possibility that a good question does not always produce a neat answer.

There is a completion certificate at the end, although it is important to be clear about what that means. Uncommonology® is not an accredited university and these are not formal academic qualifications.

They are records of having completed the journey.

That distinction is intentional.

The First Soft Degree

Release 1.0 also includes the first paid course in the wider Uncommonology structure.

The Soft Degree is called Symbolic Traditions — Why Symbols Refuse to Stay Silent.

It belongs to the Humanities and explores something humans have been doing for an extraordinarily long time: attaching meaning to things.

Images, numbers, animals, shapes, colours, gestures and objects can acquire meanings that change dramatically depending upon who is looking at them, where they appear and when.

A serpent can represent danger, healing, transformation, knowledge or something else entirely. A crown can signify authority in one setting and parody it in another. Numbers that appear mundane in one culture can become loaded with significance in another.

The course is not designed to tell students that every symbol has a secret universal meaning waiting to be decoded.

Quite the opposite.

It asks students to look more carefully at context, evidence, interpretation and uncertainty.

The Soft Degree costs £20 as a one-off purchase. There is no subscription attached to it and no pretence that completing it produces an accredited degree.

It is simply a larger piece of structured uncommon learning.

Why Launch Before Everything Exists?

There is always another reason not to launch something.

Another page could be polished. Another course could be added. Another tiny visual inconsistency could be corrected. Another feature could be imagined that would make everything feel more complete.

Eventually, perfection becomes an extremely effective hiding place.

Release 1.0 draws a line through that problem.

Uncommonology® now contains enough of its intended shape to be used properly. That does not mean every future part has already been built. It means the central idea can now survive contact with an actual student.

That is a much more useful test than endlessly admiring it from inside the workshop.

From this point onwards, Uncommonology can grow as something that exists rather than something perpetually preparing to exist.

What Has Not Changed

Opening the doors has not changed the reason Uncommonology was created.

It is still a place for subjects that provoke the wonderful reaction: “I had absolutely no idea about that.”

That might mean an overlooked piece of history, a strange scientific episode, an abandoned language, an unexpected etymology, an old superstition, an idea that arrived centuries before anyone was ready for it, or a connection between familiar things that suddenly makes both of them look different.

The intention is not to make learning artificially impressive.

It is to make being interested in things feel worthwhile in its own right.

There are no entry requirements for curiosity.

There is no age at which somebody becomes too old to discover something peculiar.

And there is certainly no requirement that everything worth learning must eventually appear on an examination paper.

Release 1.0

So this is the marker.

Before 23 July 2026, Uncommonology® was being built.

After it, people could begin.

There will be more stories, more unusual subjects and more parts of Uncommonology to discover as the project develops. But those belong to later chapters.

This one records something much simpler.

The lights are on.

The first courses are waiting.

And the doors are open.
